Job Summary:Great River Energy is seeking a Data Science and Modelling Intern at our headquarters facility in Maple Grove, MN with the eligibility to work in a hybrid work environment.

This internship position will assist with our initiatives towards a carbon-free power supply portfolio, helping to achieve our targets for renewable solar and wind energy as well as promoting sustainable electrification. GRE’s demand response programs support flexible electrical load programs at residential homes, commercial business, and industrial manufacturing sites. These load management programs are part of GRE’s distributed energy resource portfolio, and are being orchestrated in a coordinated way to serve the Minnesota power grid like a virtual power plant, offsetting the need to build or operate traditional fossil fuel peaking power plants – thus offsetting carbon emissions and decreasing capital investments for our cooperative.

This position will work in a small technical team that supports the Demand Response programs at GRE: The Distributed Energy Resource Portfolio Department. This group oversees and designs the software systems that operate and dispatch 400 MW of controllable load programs across 250,000 devices at homes and businesses in Minnesota. These devices include electric vehicles, electric water heaters, air conditioners, air source heat pumps, electric furnace systems, farming irrigation systems, interruptible industrial processes, and distributed emergency generators at office buildings.

Key Responsibilities:
This position will specifically support the data analytics processes that GRE uses for analyzing the quantifiable impact that each Demand Response (DR) program and distribution zone is capable of. These DR capabilities are being analyzed to support the regional electric grid during peak power demand times during extreme weather events, but also to quantify the economic impact in the context of the Midcontinent Independent System Operator “MISO” regional electricity market.

This position will be primarily developing data extraction, transformation and loading Python functions supported by the department, while also supporting visualization tools and data plotting using results from our data analytics team. They will be introduced to complex Excel spreadsheets and dashboards developed within Microsoft PowerBI.The position will also be expected to collaborate on writing and maintaining Python code through Visual Studio Code and interacting with a variety of GitLab repositories for sharing and enhancing data analytics functions shared within the department. The chosen candidate will have the opportunity to learn the technical dynamics of matured demand response programs as well as an in-depth exposure to MISO market registration rules and requirements for Load Modifying Resources.

Job Duties:
  1. Interpreting complex Microsoft Excel workbooks, following dependencies of equations and formulas to understand data flow.
  2. Producing data visualizations and dashboards of data results, insights, trends, and relationships
  3. Developing Python code for extracting data from GRE databases and external APIs, and supporting these functions in a shared GitLab project site.
  4. Developing Python code for data transformations and data plotting, and supporting these functions in a shared GitLab project site.
  5. Developing Python code for data analysis, building models based on linear regressions and machine learning algorithms, and supporting these functions in a shared GitLab project site.
  6. Present work results to team members and other GRE divisions for information sharing. Communicate and educate others about best practices for data science.

Qualifications:
Requirements:
  1. Must be enrolled in college and working towards a degree in data science, physics, mathematics, engineering (mechanical, electrical, chemical, bio systems or computer science).
  2. Clear communication skills, self-motivated, able to take ideas from general concept to a working design using personal judgement and style.
  3. Sophisticated Microsoft Excels skills required, demonstrating broad knowledge of managing nested equations within complex Excel Workbooks.
  4. Exposure with Python software coding skills required and experience with compilers like Jupyter Notebooks and VS Code preferred.
  5. Experience using data analytical visualization tools. Experience with Microsoft Power BI is highly preferred, but similar skills in other applications or programming environments would be valued experience.
Duration:
Duration of the internship will be FT during the summer of 2025 with the opportunity to continue throughout the school year on a PT basis (minimum of 10 hours/week).

Working ConditionsTypical office environment.
