Job Summary
We are seeking a Data Science & Modeling Intern to support initiatives toward a carbon-free energy portfolio, advancing renewable solar and wind resources while promoting sustainable electrification. This role will be part of the Member Resource Portfolio Department, which manages demand response programs that coordinate over 400 MW of controllable load across 250,000 devices in Minnesota homes and businesses. These programs operate like a virtual power plant, offsetting the need for traditional fossil fuel generation and reducing carbon emissions. The intern will work on data analytics, visualization, and Python-based development projects to help quantify the performance and economic impact of these demand response programs.
Key Responsibilities
- Interpret complex Microsoft Excel workbooks, tracing formulas and data dependencies.
- Produce data visualizations and dashboards to display insights, trends, and relationships.
- Develop Python code for data extraction from internal databases and external APIs.
- Build Python functions for data transformation, plotting, and analysis.
- Support model development, including linear regressions and machine learning algorithms.
- Collaborate with team members using GitLab repositories for version control and shared code.
- Present analysis results to team members and other departments.
- Share knowledge and promote best practices for data science and modeling.
Requirements
- Currently enrolled in a degree program in data science, physics, mathematics, or engineering (mechanical, electrical, chemical, biosystems, or computer science) at an accredited institution.
- Strong Microsoft Excel skills, including managing nested equations in complex workbooks.
- Experience coding in Python; familiarity with Jupyter Notebooks or VS Code preferred.
- Exposure to data visualization tools; Power BI strongly preferred.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Self-motivated, analytical, and able to take ideas from concept to implementation.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team-focused environment.
Internship Duration
- Full-Time: 40 hours/week during Summer 2026.
- Continuation of hybrid work eligibility may be granted upon successful onboarding and at the discretion of management.
